Episode: 00190 Released on December 18, 2023 Description: Neil Hubbert always knew he wanted to have a career in law enforcement – it was like continuing the family business! Neil started out his career working various positions within Booz Allen Hamilton, a government contractor, notably as a diagnostic analyst and an intelligence analyst where he worked with a myriad of law enforcement agencies with their respective investigations. As part of his job, communication was key as he needed to help ensure different agencies didn’t impede on one another’s investigations (i.e., conduct proper deconflictions). After seven years with the agency, Neil continued his career as a trainer, helping multiple law enforcement agencies improve their analytical and investigative processes. Neil is currently a research associate for IDEA Analytics.

Doris has since transitioned into the private sector, and discusses the nuances of being a private provider in law enforcement. Episode: 00186 Released on November 20, 2023 Description: Michelle Belongie joins us this week with a throwback to how the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Analysts Network (WILEAN) started and how crime analysis has evolved over the past 25+ years. Michelle shares an ordinance that was implemented to hold landlords accountable for the crimes and disturbances that occur at their property in order to reduce those respective activities; the extra level of responsibility (or rather, fines) prompted landlords to be more vigilant, which in turn reduces the odds of criminality. Over her 25+ years career with the Green Bay Police Department, Michelle had the opportunity to help shape the agency, including selecting a suitable RMS, developing crime prevention programs, and training new employees. Michelle is currently a crime analyst for the Green Bay PD.

Episode: 00185 Released on November 13, 2023 Description: Svetlana Gubin didn’t let a language barrier stop her from breaking into the law enforcement analysis industry, and is now currently teaching other analysts how to effectively present data through the power of, well, Power BI. Svetlana shares how she capitalized on her advanced mathematical skills to secure a position as a crime analyst, and why she preferred her transition to a business analyst for the Oakland Police Department. While Svetlana had worked on a variety of investigations, including homicides, drugs, and gang violence, Svetlana focuses on her ability and fascination with finding patterns and series within a seemingly random dataset of criminal activities. Svetlana and Jason discuss the phenomenon of most agencies focusing heavily on basic descriptive analysis, when there’s so much more powerful analytics that an analyst can focus on in order to address crime reduction and public safety policies. Svetlana is currently a business analyst for the Oakland Police Department and teaches Power BI for Law Enforcement through the IACA.

Nikki spearheaded the creation of her agency’s RTCC, and has presented to multiple entities, including the IACA Annual Training Conference, on how other agencies can create their own. Nikki’s badge story involves a homicide case that was presented as a burglary first where a boyfriend shot his girlfriend, hid the gun, and claimed it was stolen to police. Nikki and her team’s quick actions led to the boyfriend’s quick arrest. This episode summarizes Nikki’s journey of creating her agency’s RTCC, how she handled transitioning from a colleague to a supervisor, and her involvement with the National Real Time Crime Center Association. Nikki is currently the Real Time Crime Center Supervisor at Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, Administrative Vice President of the National Real Time Crime Center Association, & FDLE Certified Analyst.

John is skilled in advanced data / statistical analytics, GIS, and operational management, and prides himself on doing “the little things” well each day. One of those days was how he came across his badge story: identifying and helping solve a sex offense case as well as uncovering a missing person. While John has considered the prospects of bringing his skill sets to a bigger city, he enjoys the comfort of a smaller jurisdiction. John is currently a crime analyst for the Shreveport (LA) Police Department.
